Flamenco singer, Antonio Mena, performs at Teatro Flamenco Granada

Antonio Mena: From Jaén’s Flamenco Song to the Granada Stage

At Teatro Flamenco Granada, we are delighted to welcome cantaor, Antonio Mena, a flamenco singer from Jaén who has built a solid career within the world of flamenco. His presence on our stage in Sensaciones, the most popular, live flamenco show in Granada, brings additional authenticity to our performances, offering audiences a truly enriching experience.

Antonio Mena: flamenco origins and studies

Antonio Mena began his journey in flamenco singing at the age of seventeen in his hometown of Jaén. His interest in flamenco singing was not sudden, it grew gradually from a deepening connection with the arte jondo, the deep art of flamenco, influenced by his family environment and early musical experiences. What began as fascination soon developed into a vocation, bringing with it the need for formal technical training.

To give shape to this artistic drive, Antonio enrolled in the flamenco workshops of the Universidad Popular Municipal de Jaén, where he began training under the guidance of the cantaora Vicky Romero. Under her tutelage, he not only developed a solid understanding of traditional flamenco styles but also perfected essential aspects such as pitch, rhythm, artistic expression and the emotional interpretation of the classical repertoire.

His dedication and perseverance led him to compete in the Talento Flamenco de Cante por Tarantos competition in 2017, organised by the Fundación Cristina Heeren in Almería. He was awarded first prize, a recognition that not only brought him visibility within the Andalusian flamenco circuit but also opened the door to further professional training. Thanks to a scholarship, Antonio Mena moved to Seville to continue his studies at the Fundación Cristina Heeren de Arte Flamenco, a key institution in the education of emerging flamenco talent. There, he deepened his mastery of traditional styles and expanded his interpretive skills, surrounded by renowned teachers and fellow artists who shared his artistic commitment.

Antonio Mena: professional flamenco career

Since finishing his flamenco studies, Antonio Mena has pursued a career of continuous growth, marked by his participation in recitals, festivals, and flamenco shows across various Andalusian provinces. His singing has been heard in peñas flamencas, traditional tablaos, municipal theatres and specialised events, where he has been praised for both his command of the classical repertoire and his ability to connect emotionally with audiences.

A highlight of his career was his participation in the closing event of the Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla in 2018, a prestigious occasion that brings together established artists and emerging talents of the genre.

Antonio Mena’s interpretive style is defined by a profound respect for traditional flamenco singing. He masters flamenco styles such as soleá, seguiriya, taranta and bulería and in each one demonstrates not only technical skill but also a distinctive personal touch. His approach seeks to balance the authentic, traditional flamenco styles with the sensibility of contemporary, modern flamenco that flows naturally through his performance.
