Clara Checa: youth and flamenco dancing talent at Teatro Flamenco Granada

Flamenco dancer with Andalusian roots and international projection

Flamenco is an art form that evolves with each generation and Clara Checa is a clear example of the new wave of flamenco dancers that, without losing the traditional essence of flamenco, bring a fresh perspective and personality to the flamenco shows in Granada. This Granada-Almerian flamenco dancer has developed a solid career, becoming one of the young up-and-coming flamenco talents on the current flamenco scene.

Clara Checa’s path has been forged based on consistency, studying with some of the greatest flamenco masters and her ability to transmit emotion through flamenco dancing. At Teatro Flamenco Granada we celebrate the careers of flamenco artists such as Clara Checa, who, with skill and dedication continue to enrich flamenco in Granada.

Clara Checa: the first steps of a flamenco dancer

From a young age, Clara Checa, felt the call of flamenco dancing, beginning her flamenco dance training at the Roquetas de Mar Dance School. Her passion for flamenco dancing led her to move to Seville at the age of 16 where she widened her studies at the Andalusian Dance Centre (Centro Andaluz de Danza).

There she had the opportunity to train with such great flamenco dance professionals as Rafael Campallo, Rocío Coral, Úrsula López, Rubén Olmo, Miguel Angel Corbacho and María Pagés, to name just a few.  This stage was key in her artistic development, allowing her to perfect her technique and discover her own personal style.

Clara Checa: awards and recognition

Clara Checa’s talent soon began to shine and the first awards began to appear. In 2019 she was awarded first prize in the VII Concurso Internacional de Baile Flamenco Puro in the Solo Flamenco Dancers in progress, within the prestigious Jerez Festival.

Later she was awarded the first prize in the Certamen Jóvenes Valores de Flamenco in Nerja, which cemented her potential and projection in the world of flamenco dancing. In addition, she was awarded a scholarship to the Centro Andaluz de Danza in Seville and took part in the Compañía de Danza de María Pagés in Madrid, both experiences that allowed her to continue to grow and nurture different styles and visions of flamenco.

Clara Checa: a career marked by important flamenco dance companies

Clara Checa’s talent and versatility have allowed her to work in different, well-known flamenco dance companies, participating in top flamenco shows and appearing on national and international stages. She was part of the Anabel Velasco company and also that of Carmen Cortés, two names that are fundamental parts of the contemporary flamenco scene.

From 2022 she collaborated with Eduardo Guerrero, participating in flamenco shows like “Jondo, del primer llanto, del primer beso.” debuting in the Gardens of the Generalife in Granada and performing in cities such as Madrid, Zaragoza, Las Palmas, San Sebastián, Mahón and Bogotá. In addition, she performed in “Debajo de los Pies” another flamenco show which continues touring theatres in Spain and overseas.

Clara Checa: presence in the contemporary flamenco scene

Clara Checa has not only shone in choreographic productions, she has also demonstrated her talent as a solo flamenco dancer in a variety of flamenco shows. Her style of flamenco dance, charged with strength and sensitivity, has opened doors to performing in a wide range of different flamenco programmes, captivating audiences with her energy and elegance.
